BLOOK, Miniature. A nineteenth century mirror case or compact in the form of a bound book. With a handcut gilt paper inscription within.
(France) ca. 1865? probably Napoleon III period. . A very beautifully preserved blook miniature. The "binding" is green ribbed cloth with five raised bands in gilt decorative paper on the spine. Upper and lower covers are framed with the same bands of gilt decorative paper ; upper cover also has a gilt paper design in the central panel. Paper covered edges are gilt. When opened, the blook displays its original mirror, gilt framed, on the upper board. On the lower board is a gilt framed decoratively cut inscription, also executed in gilt paper saying: " M.E./qui vous/M." This inscription is set against a turquoise paper and protected by a transparent glass-type surface. "Text block" is 5.2 x 3.4 cm.; binding is 5.7.5 x 3.8 cm. the mirror with its frame is 3 x 5 cm; the inscription in the frame is also 3 x 5 cm.
The mirror has lost silvering, but the item is in fine condition.
