DRAWING IN PUBLIC EDUCATION: The Features of the Study Which Should Be Taught In Primary, Grammar, and High Schools. An Address...

Boston: L. Prang and Company 1880. An address delivered before the University Convocation of the State of New York, at Albany, July 9, 1879. Prang published this address n the same year that their TEACHER'S MANUAL FOR PRANG'S SHORTER COURSE IN FORM STUDY AND DRAWING, co-authored by Clarke, appeared. Just a few short years ago, Prang had captured the art instruction market by becoming the publisher for Walter Smith's revolutionary textbooks. Their influence can be seen in the plates accompanying Clarke's address. Clarke stresses that drawing now occupies a place beside reading, writing, and arithmetic in public education and proceeds to outline and illustrate the basic steps and principles to be considered at each educational level. Some small but attractive chromolithographed illustrations enhance the text. We have not located a copy of this address in OCLC, but a work by John Clarke with a different title relating to art education shows up in a collection of bound pamphlets at Stanford. 8vo (21.5 x 14.5 cm.); 16 pp. + 7 plates with some colour printing.

Original printed paper covers, thin backing seems to have been reinforced with a bit of glue, some minor scuffing and soiling, a fold to lower cover; penned name and date on upper cover.
